Did you buy an (expensive) dashcam with good resolution but the license plates are still not readable? Follow these steps to solve the problem.

1. View images on your computer
   First view the images on your PC or laptop by removing the SD card from the dashcam and playing a video file. If you watch the videos on your phone or the dashcam itself, the quality is often a lot less than on the computer. The images are usually compressed via Wi-Fi and the LCD screen of your phone or the dashcam is often too small to see details.
   
   
2. Adjust the resolution
   If the images via computer are still disappointing, it could be that the set resolution is not right. With many dashcams, the highest resolution is often also the one with the lowest number of frames per second, e.g. 24fps. Especially for recognising license plates in moving cars, it may be wise to set the resolution to a higher number of fps, e.g. 720p or 1080 60fps.
   
   
3. Change settings
   Many dashcams allow you to adjust other settings besides resolution that make for better videos. You can sometimes increase image quality or adjust exposure to suit conditions. Just be aware that this usually consumes more data which means you can save fewer videos on the SD card.
   
   
4. Dashcam of insufficient quality
   The quality of images is primarily determined by the quality of the image sensor and chip used (rather than resolution or other features). If these are not good, the dashcam can theoretically still take images in 4K resolution on which you cannot read license plates. Therefore, before buying, always look at some images of the dashcam to determine whether the quality meets your expectations.
   
   
5. Environment too dark
   It is almost impossible for almost all cameras to capture good footage in complete darkness. So even if your dashcam is equipped with a good image sensor or Night vision, you may still find that the quality in the dark is disappointing.
